The City of Lakeland recognized the creativity and talent of local students during its inaugural Young Artist Spotlight Competition, with winners honored Thursday evening at the city’s Board of Commissioners meeting.
The event drew an enthusiastic crowd to City Hall, where more than 50 residents, family members, teachers, and community supporters gathered to celebrate the accomplishments of Lakeland’s young artists. Attendance was so strong that portions of the evening became standing-room only, underscoring the community’s excitement surrounding the competition.
A total of 49 pieces of artwork were submitted by Lakeland students of all ages, showcasing a diverse range of artistic styles, imagination, and creativity. The evening featured a public art installation, refreshments, and a ceremony dedicated to recognizing student achievement while strengthening community engagement through the arts.
Winners were announced across elementary, middle, and high school divisions, with students receiving certificates and commemorative photos alongside Josh Roman. Their framed artwork will remain on display at City Hall for the next six months before being returned to the artists.
In the elementary division, winners included Jooa Kim for “Southwest Succulents at Sunset,” Vivienne Vasaturo for “In My Backyard,” and Isla Self for “Revontulet: Fox Fire Northern Lights.”
Middle school honorees included Aiden Shelly for “Self Portrait,” Madison Snow for “Lemons,” and Clara Moore for “Emerald Eye.”
High school winners included Jana Al-Bonni for “Self Portrait,” Joshua Mosbruger for “Lakehouse,” and Baylor Hutchens for “Ike.”
The evening’s Mayor’s Choice Award was presented to Nora Meneses for “Oil Pastel Flowers.”
City leaders also expressed appreciation to the teachers, families, and community members who helped support the event and encourage student participation. Following the competition’s strong turnout and overwhelmingly positive response, city officials announced plans to host another Young Artist Spotlight competition this fall.
