Newest gateway sign for Lakeland is under construction

Work continues on the third Lakeland gateway sign, alongside a wooden Lakeland sign which will be removed

The newest and third gateway sign for Lakeland is under construction today (6.2.20) at Chambers Chapel Road and U.S. Highway 64.

Emily Harrell, Lakeland city engineer, said the sign is funded through a $25,000 grant from Shelby County, co-sponsored by Shelby County Commissioner Mick Wright.  Wagner General Contractors is doing the work with construction complete by June 30th or sooner.

The new sign will mirror the other two stone signs currently in place at two Highway 64 locations: Fletcher Trace Parkway and Canada Road.

The license agreement to install the sign at the new location was executed with TDOT (Tennessee Department of Transportation) last July.

Mrs. Harrell was asked about other sign locations in the City.

“The Chamber (Lakeland Area Chamber of Commerce) has been interested in funding a Gateway sign at the western border of Highway 64,” said Mrs. Harrell.  “TDOT, however, will be reconstructing the interchange at Highway 64 and I-40 in the next several years.  I advised them to wait until TDOT has secured the right-of-way for the project.  The Highway 70 sign will most likely be incorporated with new development.  TDOT will not allow it within their right of way, so we will need to work with the developer on each end to secure an easement for the signs.”
