Fall does not have to mean a long road trip to the mountains or an elaborate weekend getaway. For residents of Lakeland and the surrounding communities, plenty of seasonal activities can be found without leaving Shelby County.
As September moves toward October, cooler mornings and changing leaves can make outdoor activities more inviting. From walking trails and fishing close to home to visiting a farmers market or packing a family picnic, Shelby County offers plenty of ways to enjoy a fall weekend without spending hours in the car. Whether the goal is exercise, family time, or simply getting outside for a few hours, here are some ideas for making the most of fall close to home.
Spend the Morning at a Lakeland Park
A fall weekend can start right here in Lakeland. International Harvester Managerial Park, located at 4523 Canada Road, offers 65 acres of outdoor space along with a 2.8-mile trail, lake, and picnic areas. Visitors can walk or bike the trail, fish at the lake, or simply find a spot for a picnic.[1] The combination makes the park suitable for several types of outings. Someone looking for exercise can walk the trail, while families can make an afternoon out of lunch and time near the lake.
Lakeland also has smaller parks that work well for a casual weekend outing. City Hall Park, for example, includes a paved jogging trail, playground, pavilion, picnic tables, and grills. Cool Springs Park features a half-mile walking trail that travels alongside a residential road and into a wooded area.[2] These smaller parks can be especially convenient for families who want to get outside without committing an entire day to an excursion.
Explore the Trails at Shelby Farms Park
Those looking for a longer outdoor adventure can head to Shelby Farms Park. At approximately 4,500 acres, the park has more than 40 miles of paved and unpaved trails and more than 20 bodies of water. The property also offers opportunities for fishing, wildlife viewing, playground visits, and other recreation.[3]
The extensive trail network makes it possible to choose an outing based on ability and available time. The Chickasaw Trail, for instance, is a 2.75-mile paved route that travels through forested areas and past several lakes. The six-mile Tour de Wolf is an unpaved loop designed for activities including hiking, running, and mountain biking. Other routes connect visitors with different sections of the park and the surrounding area.[4]
A trail outing does not necessarily have to be about covering as many miles as possible. Fall weekends are also a chance to slow down. Families can take shorter walks, look for wildlife, photograph the changing landscape, or bring a picnic to enjoy after exploring.
Make a Farmers Market Part of Saturday Morning
Fall is also harvest season, making a farmers market a natural addition to a weekend itinerary. The Memphis Farmers Market operates in Downtown Memphis on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. during its April-through-October season. The market brings together local and regional farmers as well as vendors offering prepared foods and kitchen and garden products. It has served the community since 2006 and is celebrating its 20th season in 2026.[5]
A market visit can be more than a grocery run. Families can make an outing of choosing seasonal ingredients and then use those purchases for a meal later in the weekend.
Fall produce also offers an easy way to bring the season home. Instead of planning an expensive day out, consider visiting the market in the morning, choosing ingredients together, and spending the afternoon making soup, baked goods, or another cool-weather meal.
Pack a Picnic Instead of Going Out to Eat
One of the simplest fall activities is also one of the most affordable: pack lunch and eat outside. A picnic can turn an ordinary Saturday or Sunday into something that feels different without requiring extensive planning. Sandwiches, fruit, snacks, and drinks are enough for a casual meal at a local park.
Families with children can combine a picnic with a playground visit, while adults might pair lunch with a walk or bike ride. A blanket, football, Frisbee, or deck of cards can provide additional entertainment. Fall weather can change quickly, so checking the forecast before leaving home is always worthwhile. Dressing in layers can also make outdoor activities more comfortable as temperatures fluctuate between morning and afternoon.
Take the Kids Somewhere They Can Explore
Families looking for a more child-centered outing can build their weekend around outdoor play. Shelby Farms Park’s Woodland Discovery Playground provides an outdoor play environment within the larger park, giving families an option that can easily be combined with walking, picnicking, or exploring other areas nearby. The park also offers open spaces for simple activities such as flying a kite, playing tag, or tossing a ball.[6]
Parents do not necessarily need a scheduled festival or ticketed attraction to create an enjoyable fall afternoon. Sometimes an open field, playground, and a few hours away from screens are enough. A family nature scavenger hunt can add another activity. Children can look for different leaf shapes, acorns, birds, insects, or signs of the changing season. Taking pictures instead of collecting items keeps the activity simple and leaves natural areas undisturbed.
Go Fishing Close to Home
Fishing is another activity that fits naturally into a slower fall weekend. Lakeland residents have an option nearby at International Harvester Managerial Park, while Shelby Farms Park provides additional fishing opportunities throughout its extensive system of lakes and ponds.
Even for beginners, fishing can provide an excuse to spend several quiet hours outdoors. Families can use the experience to introduce children to basic fishing skills, talk about local wildlife, or simply enjoy time near the water. Before fishing at any public location, visitors should check current regulations, licensing requirements, and park-specific rules.
Try a Bike Ride
Fall can also be a comfortable season for cycling, particularly as the intense heat of summer begins to ease.
The Shelby Farms Greenline provides one of the area’s best-known options. The paved route connects Memphis with Shelby Farms Park and continues toward Cordova, allowing cyclists and pedestrians to travel through different parts of the county while largely avoiding vehicle traffic. Shelby Farms Park also has numerous additional trails where bicycles are permitted.[7]
A bike outing can be as short or ambitious as the rider wants. Families might ride a small section before turning around, while more experienced cyclists can plan a longer route. Lakeland’s own trails provide another option for residents who would rather stay closer to home.
Check the Community Calendar
Fall weekends also bring community activities, concerts, recreation programs, and seasonal events throughout Shelby County. Instead of deciding on plans weeks in advance, residents can make a habit of checking local calendars toward the end of each week.
Lakeland Parks and Recreation maintains programming and special events throughout the year, giving residents opportunities to participate in activities close to home.[8] Other communities and organizations throughout Shelby County maintain their own calendars as well. This approach can uncover everything from festivals and concerts to recreational programs and family activities that might otherwise be easy to miss.
Create Your Own Fall Tradition
Not every weekend needs an official event. One of the advantages of fall is that many seasonal traditions can be created with very little planning. Take the same family walk every Sunday afternoon. Pick a favorite picnic spot. Visit a farmers market once a month. Photograph the same tree every week as its leaves change. Have an outdoor movie night, make s’mores in the backyard where permitted, or spend an evening watching the sunset. These activities can become traditions precisely because they are simple enough to repeat.
For Lakeland residents, enjoying fall does not require traveling far from home. Shelby County has parks, trails, markets, lakes, playgrounds, and community activities that can fill an entire weekend or just a few free hours. As September gives way to October and cooler weather settles across West Tennessee, sometimes the best weekend getaway is not really a getaway at all.
