$10K grant awarded to City for tennis courts work

The City of Lakeland has received a $10,000 grant to refurbish the two tennis courts at 9822 Beverle Rivera Drive in Windward Slopes Park.

Kevin Rooney, director of the City Parks and Recreation Department, said the grant is issued by the United States Tennis Association and will be matched with $13,000 from the Parks budget.

“The grant amount was the highest we could receive for our resurfacing project,” said Mr. Rooney.

“With these funds we are going to resurface the tennis courts, add shade benches for the players, install new net posts, manual scoreboards for each court and new windscreens.

“We also have an Eagle Scout who is going to build shade structures for the existing benches on the outside of the court.

“It should be a nice overhaul for everyone who enjoys the courts. The resurfacing portion of the project is going to begin Nov. 14 as long as the weather cooperates.”

He expects all improvements to be finished by March, sooner if weather permits.
