Arlington High School (AHS) art students, including seven from Lakeland, won many awards at this year’s Mid-South Scholastic Art Awards competition.

Tyler Hill, communications coordinator for Arlington Community Schools, said the school won more Gold Key awards than any other public school in Shelby County.

Winners were announced Monday (2.12.18), according to Mr. Hill.  The competition is hosted by Memphis Brooks Museum of Art and students submitted artwork over several months.

The program recognizes students’ outstanding achievements in a competitive annual exhibition and provides students with cash prizes and scholarship opportunities.

The seven Lakeland winners are listed below.

Dasia Lloyd, AHS senior, walked away with the largest prize, one of two $40,000 full-ride art scholarships to the University of Memphis.  She won for her portfolio called “Simply Complex,” a showcase of all things mechanical such as gears and machine parts.

Other cash prize winners include Ally Ware, who won the Printmaking Award and Sydnee Jackson who won the Amy Lange Award and ranked 2nd place overall in the senior division.

In total, AHS captured 4 Gold Key Portfolios, 17 Gold Keys, 17 Silver Keys and 30 Honorable Mentions and submitted more than 100 pieces.

“The number of students going through our fine arts program has increased significantly over the past few years, and the dedication of our students and teachers helped us tremendously,” said AHS Art Teacher Melanie Anderson when speaking about the program’s success. “From Art 1 to our Advanced Placements courses, our students have countless avenues to showcase their talents.”

More than 3,500 entries, including paintings, drawings, photography, sculptures and graphic design pieces, were entered this year.

Lakeland students attend AHS as part of an interlocal agreement between Arlington Community Schools and the Lakeland School System (LSS) until a high school is built in Lakeland.
