Envision athletic fields, walking trails, a playground, splash pad and a recreational lake, all on an already-owned piece of property in the City of Lakeland.
Such an idea will be proposed to the Board of Commissioners (BOC) in their work session tonight (6.1.17), according to Jim Atkinson, city manager.
The community park would be located on a 100-acre site at the southeast corner of Canada Road and Memphis Arlington Road. It was once discussed as a possible park site, then dismissed and is again back on the table for consideration.
A2H Inc has developed a concept plan for the acreage but cost estimates are taking longer than expected, said Mr. Atkinson. “The approval (by the BOC) would be for the 100 acres and the general concept plan,” said the City Manger.
“We have the draft concept plan. A2H is currently putting together cost estimates, which includes creating the rough grading plan. The grading may dictate some minor changes in the concept plan.” Once cost estimates are received, the City will determine the phase lines and how much to spend on initial construction. Mr. Atkinson said there are a few options for funding and a decision will be made soon.
The new park area was discussed at the May meeting of the Parks and Recreation Department Board. With the increase in sports activities, the current facilities at City Hall Park are stretched to break point. And to that end the Board was delighted at the design for the new mixed use recreation and sports park with proposed fitness and workout stations, five multi-use fields, a softball wagon wheel, a seven-acre lake, splash pad and 1.3 mile primitive trail.
Its site across the road from IH Park at 4523 Canada Road allows for cross development and the added parking will help alleviate problems with parking during events.
The resolution to be presented tonight authorizes the City Manager to proceed with pursuing plan approval for the park concept.
